USA, Napa: 2005 Napa Retrospective
June 30, 2015
This has been a fascinating vintage to follow. When I tasted it from barrel, I thought it was a very good year, but not particularly special in any way. Once the wines were in bottle, my impression of the vintage jumped dramatically. The wines had gained some weight, and seemed to be richer, and deeper as well as potentially very complex, with wonderful freshness and purity. Several follow-up tastings over the past decade have only reinforced my view that I had underrated the 2005 North Coast Bordeaux blends from barrel. At ten years of age, the wines are showing fabulously well, and many of the wines are far greater than I ever anticipated. This was a cool year for growing conditions in Northern California, with one similarity to the 2005 Bordeaux of from the same year – California had a fabulous Indian summer and an absolutely magnificent month of October, allowing producers to pick at their leisure and time the harvest of their different vineyards whenever they reached optimum maturity. The results of these tastings were truly stunning, and this 2005 vintage now deserves to be included with the other great vintages of the first decade of the 21st century, 2001, 2002 and 2007 – it is that special. The wines at age ten are remarkably fresh and youthful, yet compelling, powerful and multidimensional. All of these wines were tasted in March and early April of 2015.
2005 Hundred Acre Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Ark Vineyard Review by RobertParker.com # , #219 (Jun 2015) Rating: 100 Drink 2015 – 2040 Another extraordinary wine is the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Ark Vineyard from Howell Mountain. Woodbridge has always been extraordinarily high on this vineyard. The 2005 Ark, which The Wine Advocate also presented in London at our Master Class (and it blew many a British taster away) is incredibly youthful and tastes more like it’s two to three years old rather than ten. It has an extraordinary nose of blueberry, mulberry and blackberry fruit mixed with acacia floral notes, lead pencil shavings (seen to be often a characteristic of Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignons) and a full-bodied, multilayered mouthfeel with no sense of heaviness. The fresh acids, the ripe, well-integrated tannin, and stunning concentration are just magnificent. The scary thing about the 2005 Ark Vineyard is that it tastes as if it still has a ways to go – and could even get better! Drink it over the next 20-25 years. 2005 Hundred Acre Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan Vineyard
2005 Hundred Acre Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan
Review by RobertParker.com # , #219 (Jun 2015) Rating: 100 Drink 2015 – 2040 The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan is perfection! It was too easy to deliver the ultimate three-digit score. A sensational nose of pen ink, graphite, forest floor, crème de cassis, a hint of white chocolate, and cedar wood are all present in this majestic, multi-layered wine built like a skyscraper. The freshness is still a component part of this full-bodied, stunningly concentrated wine that is pure Napa purity, power and compelling intensity. This is a great wine, still youthful at age ten, and capable of at least another 20-25 years of evolution.
